BP3_2009121 Blog Reader Research Educational use for Blogs

As teachers continue to make strides in education it’s not enough to just have computers in the classroom, quality lessons need to be developed and implemented. Many studies have addressed the problems in education such as; low student participation, lack of interest and lack of determination, change in is inevitable. Technology should be used as a vital part of the learning environment and not a bonus for completing class work. Blogging in education is one way to address the need for change.

Blogging can allow a steady communication between student and teacher to share ideas and will help students develop writing skills. “In education they can be used for student journals and portfolios, communication with parents and community members, faculty coaching, classroom management (e.g., posting assignments), and other knowledge management tools (Long, 2002) and enhancing classroom discussion” (Deubel, P. 2007).

Blogging can also be used between study groups within a class or between different classes for communication. Students enjoy blogging many of them are blogging on Face Book and other sites already as well as sending text messages; they would send text messages all day if they could.

Blogging is a way to motivate students who have problems participating as well as provide online peer or teacher tutoring. Blogging allows students to develop higher order thinking skills as they develop writing skills. Blogging is also a place where students can publish their writhing and artwork. By using blogging as a teaching tool the classroom teacher is no longer the only audience for the students’ progress. The extended family, classmates and others in education become apart of the students progress.

Many of the benefits of blogging are yet to be discovered by highly effective teachers and their students.
